Captains' Report - Winter Season 23/24

End of Season “Triples” Tournament!

Report from Ladies captain, Helen Galassini

Ladies A

The A’s came 6th out of 7, with 14 points. We were undone by losing 6/8 dastardly championship tiebreakers – showing that we were highly competitive until the end and both couples, Ali and Helen, Leila and Jackie, took the top pair from Ledbury to championship tiebreakers. We may not have won them but we were the only ones to come close to beating them and gave them a real scare! Sadly, we will probably be ‘rewarded’ with demotion to Div. 4 next winter.

Ladies B

The B’s were really unlucky to be pipped to 2nd place in Div. 6 West by 1 point (37 to 38) by Eardisley on the final day of the season. A real shame after all their heroics and particularly as they had whitewashed Eardisley 10-0. A notable statistic to celebrate is Bella coming in top place out of 47 players. What a great achievement!

End of season tournament and party

Not only did Bella top the statistics in Div. 6 West, but she also scooped the prize in our ladies end of season tournament, where we had 14 players, including two rogue men, and an interesting three aside on court 3 so that no one had to sit out. Afterwards, we squeezed into Helen’s house for a lovely ‘pot luck’ supper with fizz.

Report from Men’s captain, Steve Meredith

Men’s A

A rain saturated Winter season took its toll on fixtures and the Men’s A team was unable to complete its fixtures until late on. With one particular team proving difficult to tie down to a date, so much so that we played on the last day of the season. It transpired that our opponents were seeking promotion and a win over us would see them succeed.  Step in a dogged MCS performance leading to win 3/1 and the discovery that we instead gained the promotion place.  Thanks to all who represented us this season, Emil, Miles, James, Ben, Luke and Allan.

This winter season and the approaching summer sees the old guard stepping down from the front line in favour of our young recruits. Let battle commence.

Men’s B

A troubled season for our second team! It became increasingly difficult to field a team this winter season and with several games pending and no representatives, it was with great reluctance that it was decided to withdraw our team from the league

We have entered the team for the summer league in the hope that some members will be willing to play in the balmy days of summer but we will review next winter’s involvement.
