Open Day & American Tournament - Sun 21 July
Great turn out for the American Tournament and Open Day
We had the most fabulous American Tournament on Sunday July 21. An incredible number of players entered which tested the scheduling skills of organisers David and Pat! A high standard of tennis was played but more importantly we all had loads of fun and laughter together.
Tournament winner Stevie with the precious quaich.
We combined this Amercian Tournament with the club Open Day and we welcomed many new members, both adult and junior, to the club before, during and after Open Day so if this is the first MCS newsletter you have received…..Welcome to MCS! We hope you enjoy many days of tennis at the club and we look forward to meeting you (if we haven’t already!).
The next tournament is on Sunday 6th October

MCS Quiz Night - Fri 2 August 🤓
Hot on the heels of the success of the American tournament was the MCS Quiz night on Friday August 2. Geoff and Mary were our quizmasters-extraordinaire and ran the evening in their usual relaxed (but firm) style! Alice organised all the other stuff……the venue, food, raffle etc …. with her happy band of helpers (far too many to mention). It was a fabulous evening, thank you to everyone who made it possible, particularly Geoff, Mary and Alice. All funds raised on the evening were for the club and thank you to those who gave so generously to the raffle and supported the club on the night. Well done to everyone who attended, especially these 3 teams!
Our winners: The Whizz Kids
2nd place: Ham n' Eggs
3rd place: The Oddballs

Meet the committee - Alice our secretary 📸
This month we bring you the fourth committee member, Alice Eden. This is Alice’s second time on the committee, with a gap of a few years in between. She is the one who puts together the minutes of the meetings. In addition to this, she is an active member, playing a prominent role in organising events including our successful quiz night last week.
Alice
When did you first play tennis? I played from a young age with my family on a grass court. Each year we would roll the grass and mark out the court with pins and a line marker. You had to have a steady eye. My parents taught me how to play and I still have my mother’s voice in my head giving me instructions. I didn’t play in a club until I joined MCS in the early 2000s.
Who is your tennis hero? Amelie Mauresmo won Wimbledon in 2006, when I was hospitalised with pneumonia. Watching her play from my hospital bed gave me the strength and determination to recover. She was my inspiration at the time and of course, she has supported Murray in his tennis career.
Tell us something interesting about yourself. I studied languages, taught English abroad and now work for the Birmingham International Academy. My regular train commute between Colwall and Birmingham can be exhausting and often frustrating, but evening tennis at the club is the perfect antidote.
What 3 words sum you up? Cruciverbalist, e-cyclist, linguist
